Causes to test

Step-by-step diagnostic workflow
- Determine bank and sensor position before testing. Sensor 1 is generally upstream of the catalyst; Sensor 2 is generally downstream, but verify service information.
- Inspect the harness near exhaust components for melting or chafing.
- For heater codes, verify power, ground/control, and heater resistance/current to specification.
- For signal codes, compare sensor activity with fuel trims and commanded mixture changes.
- Repair exhaust leaks and mixture faults before condemning the sensor.
- Clear codes only after repair, then complete an appropriate drive cycle and verify the code and symptoms do not return.

- O2/A/F sensor voltage/current as appropriate
- STFT/LTFT
- Heater command/status
- Coolant temperature
- Upstream/downstream response comparison
Severity and drivability
Low to moderate unless accompanied by severe drivability, misfire, or fuel-control faults.
Stop driving and investigate immediately if there is a flashing MIL, oil-pressure warning, overheating, fuel leakage, severe misfire, major loss of power, abnormal mechanical noise, or a transmission that is slipping badly.

- Calling every oxygen-sensor code a bad sensor
- Confusing Bank 1/Bank 2 or Sensor 1/Sensor 2
- Testing wideband A/F sensors as if they were conventional narrowband sensors
