Step-by-step diagnostic workflow

  1. Repair active misfire, rich/lean, oil-consumption, or coolant-ingestion problems before condemning a catalyst.
  2. Inspect the exhaust for leaks ahead of and around the monitored catalyst and sensors.
  3. Review upstream and downstream oxygen-sensor waveforms at a fully warmed, steady operating condition.
  4. Confirm fuel trims are reasonable and the catalyst monitor enable conditions can be met.
  5. Use manufacturer-specified catalyst efficiency tests or Mode $06 data when available.
  6. Replace the catalyst only after upstream causes and sensor/exhaust faults are ruled out.
Preserve evidence: EPA OBD guidance emphasizes that stored DTCs and freeze-frame data are important to proper diagnosis. Save them before clearing codes.
