What P0171 means

The control module has reached a lean correction threshold on Bank 1: it is adding more fuel than expected to maintain the commanded mixture.

First priority: compare fuel trims at idle and at higher RPM, then check for unmetered air and fuel-pressure problems.

Bank/sensor location note

Bank 1 is the cylinder bank containing cylinder No. 1. On an inline engine there is normally only one bank. Do not guess bank location from left/right orientation; verify the engine-specific service information.

Causes to test

Step-by-step diagnostic workflow

  1. Record fuel trims at idle and again near 2,500 RPM; the pattern helps separate vacuum leaks from fuel-delivery or measurement faults.
  2. Inspect intake ducting after the MAF, vacuum hoses, PCV connections, brake-booster hose, and intake manifold.
  3. Use a smoke test when appropriate to locate unmetered-air leaks.
  4. Check MAF/MAP plausibility and compare calculated load with expected engine operation.
  5. Verify fuel pressure/rail pressure under the condition that set the code.
  6. Check upstream exhaust leaks and sensor response before replacing an O2/A/F sensor.
Preserve evidence: EPA OBD guidance emphasizes that stored DTCs and freeze-frame data are important to proper diagnosis. Save them before clearing codes.
