Bank/sensor location note

Bank 1 is the cylinder bank containing cylinder No. 1. On an inline engine there is normally only one bank. Do not guess bank location from left/right orientation; verify the engine-specific service information.

  2. Inspect the harness near exhaust components for melting or chafing.
  3. For heater codes, verify power, ground/control, and heater resistance/current to specification.
  4. For signal codes, compare sensor activity with fuel trims and commanded mixture changes.
  5. Repair exhaust leaks and mixture faults before condemning the sensor.
  6. Clear codes only after repair, then complete an appropriate drive cycle and verify the code and symptoms do not return.
Preserve evidence: EPA OBD guidance emphasizes that stored DTCs and freeze-frame data are important to proper diagnosis. Save them before clearing codes.

  • Heater command/status
  • Coolant temperature

Severity and drivability

Low to moderate unless accompanied by severe drivability, misfire, or fuel-control faults.

Stop driving and investigate immediately if there is a flashing MIL, oil-pressure warning, overheating, fuel leakage, severe misfire, major loss of power, abnormal mechanical noise, or a transmission that is slipping badly.

  • Calling every oxygen-sensor code a bad sensor
  • Confusing Bank 1/Bank 2 or Sensor 1/Sensor 2
  • Testing wideband A/F sensors as if they were conventional narrowband sensors
